Following a quarrel with passers-by over persistent honking, a driver in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality fatally struck one pedestrian and injured four others as he forcefully drove away. The driver has been criminally detained, and the case is under further investigation, according to a police statement issued on Sunday.

At around 8:40 pm on Saturday, a 38-year-old man surnamed Xiong was driving past the entrance of a residential compound in Banan district, Chongqing. A vehicle ahead was unloading goods and blocked his path, prompting Xiong to honk repeatedly, which angered nearby pedestrians.

Several people surrounded Xiong's car and confronted him, leading to a heated argument between the two sides, the statement said.

Xiong then attempted to drive off, hitting and injuring several people who tried to block his car.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the report, subdued the driver and transported the injured to the hospital for treatment, said the statement.

One of the injured later died despite emergency treatment, while the remaining four are hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the statement.

Xiong has been criminally detained, and the case remains under investigation, police said.
