More than 740 Chinese nationals have been evacuated from Iran into Azerbaijan via the Astara border crossing as of 12 pm local time on Friday, the Chinese Embassy in Azerbaijan told the Global Times on Friday.

The embassy had earlier announced on Tuesday that it was officially launching efforts to provide necessary assistance for Chinese nationals entering Azerbaijan from Iran or transiting through the country to return to China. On Tuesday alone, over 100 Chinese citizens crossed into Azerbaijan through the Astara border, which connects the two countries.

According to the embassy, with support from the Chinese community association in Azerbaijan, the evacuees have been transported by chartered buses to the capital city of Baku for hotel accommodation, or have purchased flight tickets to return to China immediately upon arrival.

The embassy also noted that more Chinese nationals continue to arrive at the Astara crossing, and a dedicated embassy team stationed at the border will continue providing all necessary assistance.
