Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged all-out efforts to ensure the safety of people's lives and property in the fight against floods and geological disasters caused by heavy rainfalls that are currently affecting some parts of China.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, has made an important instruction regarding flood control and disaster relief work.

Xi pointed out that recent heavy rainfalls in East China, North China, and Northeast China have caused flooding and geological disasters, resulting in significant casualties and property losses in Beijing, Hebei, Jilin, Shandong, and other areas, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

He called for flood prevention, emergency response, and disaster relief work to be diligently carried out, every effort to search for and rescue missing or trapped individuals to be made, the decisive relocation and resettling of threatened populations, and casualties to be minimized to the greatest extent possible, according to Xinhua.

Xi emphasized that it is currently in the critical period of flood prevention and control, which requires all regions and relevant departments to firmly establish bottom-line thinking and worst-case scenario planning, fully implement political responsibilities, meticulously execute flood prevention measures, closely monitor weak links and key areas, scientifically allocate rescue forces and disaster relief resources, and ensure immediate response and handling in the event of sudden emergencies to fully safeguard the lives and property of the people.

Li Qiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, stated that the heavy rain and flooding in Beijing's Miyun district have caused significant casualties. Full efforts must be made to search for missing individuals, properly resettle affected populations, and minimize casualties to the greatest extent possible.

With recent heavy rainfall in parts of North China, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters should guide relevant areas to further strengthen preparedness and response to heavy rain and flood disasters, enhance monitoring and early warning for extreme weather, intensify inspections of rivers, reservoirs, and dikes for potential risks, conduct checks for urban waterlogging hazards, promptly relocate at-risk populations, and effectively ensure the safety of people's lives and property, Li said.
