Chinese Embassy in Honduras on Tuesday expressed strong opposition and condemnation to the serious erroneous remarks made by a Honduras presidential candidate publicly in the US on the Taiwan question and China-Honduran relations.

The remarks of the candidate seriously violated the one-China principle and sent a wrong signal to “Taiwan independence” separatists, which runs counter to the international trend and the course of history, a spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in Honduras said in a statement released on the embassy’s official WeChat account on Tuesday.

“China urges the relevant candidate to immediately stop, correct the wrong words and deeds concerning Taiwan-related issues, stand on the right side of history, earnestly abide by the one-China principle, and handle the Taiwan-related issues prudently,” said the spokesperson.

Honduran opposition presidential candidate Nasry Asfura claimed that he would restore relations with the island of Taiwan, the Bloomberg reported on Monday.

According to Bloomberg, Asfura even claimed that he would move Honduras closer to Taiwan island. He also claimed that he would review the agreements the Honduras government signed with China.

Asfura was a former mayor of the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa who lost to Honduran President Xiomara Castro in the 2021 presidential race. The Central American country will hold its presidential election on November 30, per Bloomberg.

“Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China,” said the spokesperson.

The one-China principle is a basic norm in international relations, an established international consensus, and the political foundation on which China establishes and develops bilateral relations with 183 countries including Honduras, which reflects the will of the people and the trend of the times, the spokesperson noted in the statement.

According to the embassy, since establishing diplomatic ties based on the one-China principle on March 26 in 2023, China-Honduras bilateral relations have achieved a high-level start, with significant achievements in practical cooperation benefiting the people of both countries and a promising future. “China is willing to continue to promote the friendly cooperation between China and Honduras in accordance with the principles of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, and common development,” read the statement.
