When asked to comment on claims by Lai Ching-te, who thanked the "civic power," and called for so-called "resisting communists and protecting Taiwan," following the first-round results of "mass recall" vote in Taiwan, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday that Lai's claims are utterly self-deceptive and fully expose his obstinate nature as a staunch advocate of "Taiwan independence." 

The DPP's crushing defeat in the July 26 vote clearly demonstrates that its policy of "confronting the mainland and pursuing independence" runs counter to mainstream public opinion on the island and has been overwhelmingly rejected by the residents of Taiwan, Chen said.
