The Chinese Embassy in Oman reiterated on Monday its warning to Chinese nationals visiting the country to refrain from engaging in telecommunications and internet fraud.

Recently, a Chinese tourist was arrested by Omani police on suspicion of involvement in telecommunications and internet fraud and other criminal activities. The Chinese Embassy advised Chinese nationals visiting the country to be vigilant against telecommunications and internet fraud, to enhance their awareness and ability to recognize and prevent scams, and to avoid engaging in illegal activities such as telecommunications and internet fraud, according to a notice released by the Chinese Embassy in Oman on Monday.

According to relevant laws and regulations of Oman, all foreign workers coming to the country must hold a formal work visa issued by the Omani government. Chinese nationals intending to work in Oman should understand the situation of their employers and the nature of the work. They should be cautious of promises such as “high salaries” and “free air tickets” and should thoroughly investigate the legality of the company’s business activities, verifying the authenticity through multiple sources, said the notice.

Chinese nationals in Oman should strictly abide by the law and should not engage in activities that are inconsistent with the type of visa or the purpose of entry. Telecom and internet fraud is a violation of the laws of both China and Oman, and one should not test the law, said the notice.

The Chinese Embassy advised Chinese nationals working in Oman to maintain close contact with their relatives and friends, such as promptly informing them of the name of their workplace, address, the name of the person in charge, and other relevant information.

The Embassy also advised people who have found themselves inadvertently involved in a telecommunications network fraud group to ensure their personal safety first and then report to the local police. If the person involved is missing in Oman, their family members should immediately report to the local police by phone. They can also authorize friends or local lawyers to assist with the report, said the notice.
