The Chinese consulate general in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia, confirmed on Tuesday that two Chinese nationals were killed in a fast boat capsizing accident off Indonesia’s Bali Island earlier that day. The Global Times learned on Thursday from the consulate that the identities of the two deceased Chinese tourists have been confirmed.
The consulate has contacted the victims’ families and pledged to do its utmost to assist in handling the aftermath. Additionally, the Chinese nationals who were injured and hospitalized on the day of the incident were discharged later that evening.
According to Indonesian news agency Antara, Indonesian Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi expressed his condolences for the "Bali Dolphin Cruise 2" speedboat accident in Sanur and pledged a swift response from authorities.
"Representing the government, I apologize for the incident and promise to carry out the accident response and investigation immediately," the minister stated in his remarks on Wednesday, according to Antara.
Head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, I Nyoman Sidakarya, said the incident occurred at around 3 pm local time, when the fast boat "Dolphin 2" was hit by large waves while traveling from Nusa Penida Port to Sanur Port in Bali Province. The vessel capsized as it neared its destination, according to Xinhua.
The boat was carrying 75 passengers, including 73 foreign tourists, as well as five crew members at the time. The accident left two people dead and one missing, while 77 others were rescued, according to Sidakarya, Xinhua reported.
The Chinese consulate said it immediately activated its emergency response mechanism after the accident, maintained close contact with Indonesian authorities, and worked to handle related aftermath matters, according to Xinhua.
The Chinese consulate advised Chinese nationals in the region on Wednesday to be vigilant against extreme weather conditions, such as strong winds and high waves, which have been prevalent in recent days.
The consulate reminded Chinese nationals to closely monitor weather changes and the warning information released by relevant authorities, and to enhance their safety awareness. Before traveling, they are advised to check the conditions of their destination and the route in advance. In the event of extreme weather, such as heavy rain and strong winds, they should adhere to the principle of "travel only if necessary," follow the arrangements of tourism management departments, and avoid participating in water-related activities, according to a notice released by the consulate on Wednesday.
In case of emergencies, they should promptly report to the police and contact the Chinese consulate for assistance, said the notice.
