Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in the city of Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, according to NDTV on Wednesday.
Modi's last visit to China was in 2019, said the NDTV report.
The visit comes amid the imposition of US tariffs and increasing pressure on India regarding oil purchase from Russia, the NDTV reported. There is expectation that under the circumstances, India's recalibration of ties with China is expected to act as a balancing factor for the US, said the NDTV report.
According to Xinhua on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed executive order imposing additional 25 percent tariff on India in response to Russian oil purchases.
The SCO Tianjin summit will be held from August 31 to September 1. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing on July 31 that leaders of over 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations will gather for the SCO Tianjin summit.
