One Chinese national is under surgery, five others suffered minor injuries and had been discharged from hospital after a bus rollover in the state of New York, CCTV News reported on Friday local time, citing Chinese consulate in New York.

The tour bus returning to New York City from Niagara Falls with 54 people aboard crashed and rolled on its side Friday on an interstate highway, killing 5 and injuring many others, AP reported, citing authorities as saying.

State police said most of the passengers on the bus were of Indian, Chinese and Filipino ethnicity, per NPR.

State police Maj. Andre Ray said at a press conference that the driver apparently became distracted, lost control and overcorrected before the bus went into the right shoulder and flipped over shortly before 12:30 pm on the eastbound side of Interstate 90 in Pembroke, which is about 40 kilometers east of Buffalo.

Mechanical failure, alcohol, and drugs have been ruled out, Ray said, adding that the driver survived and is cooperating with investigators, wionews.com reported.
