In response to an inquiry regarding a US think tank report which claimed Friday that Vietnam has significantly expanded its island-building activities in waters of the South China Sea's Nansha Qundao with the scale of construction potentially matching or even surpassing China's, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday that the Nansha Qundao are China's inherent territory.

China firmly opposes any country carrying out construction activities on illegally occupied islands and reefs, and will take necessary measures to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, said Guo.
