After US music superstar Taylor Swift announced her engagement with Super Bowl winner Travis Kelce, Chinese netizens flooded social media with blessings on Wednesday.
In a joint post on Instagram on Tuesday afternoon, the two lovers revealed their engagement with five photos. "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married," the caption read. As of 9:30 pm on Wednesday, the post has garnered over 29 million likes on the platform.
The related topic topped Sina Weibo's trending list on Wednesday. The hashtag "Meimei is engaged" had received 240 million views and over 124,000 comments as of 9:30 pm on Wednesday. Countless Chinese netizens expressed their well-wishes to the singer. Meimei is a nickname of Taylor Swift used by the singer's Chinese fans.
Some netizens quoted "Love Story", a 2008 track from her second album Fearless, to express their blessings, with many noting that the line — "It's a love story, baby, just say yes" — perfectly captured the moment.
"From this moment on, the love story has a true happy ending, and the romance that was once sung to the world now belongs entirely to her," oneWeibo user wrote.
"She has sung so many beautiful love songs, and this time she has finally found her own happiness. Best wishes to her! A true 'love story'!!" read a Weibo comment.
Swift has more than 10 million followers on Weibo alone, including Chinese table tennis Olympic champion Fan Zhendong, who often shares her lyrics and songs on the platform.
At the Paris Games, Fan clinched the men's singles gold medal with a 4-1 victory over Sweden's Truls Möregårdh. Following his triumph, he shared the track "The Alchemy" from Swift's album "The Tortured Poets Department" on his Sina Weibo account, captioning it, "Finally touch down."
The hashtag "Fan Zhendong, your idol is engaged" also drew thousands of comments, with many Weibo users tagging Fan in posts about the news.
On Wednesday evening, Fan said with a laugh in response to a journalist's question that "It's definitely best wishes," adding that he is currently more focused on training and competitions at the moment.
