John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), will lead a delegation comprising about 360 members from various sectors of the community to Beijing to attend the commemorative activities of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War to be held on September 3, the HKSAR government announced on Monday.
Those members include representatives from the SAR government, the Judiciary, the Legislative Council, District Councils, patriots who participated in the War of Resistance, veterans and their descendants, and representatives from districts, commerce and mainland enterprises, education, innovation and technology, professional services, social welfare, media, religion, culture, publication, art and sports, youth, students, and members of the public, according to the HKSAR government.
Hong Kong has been holding a variety of events for V-Day commemorations such as screening war-themed films, displaying fireworks display over Victoria Harbour and paying tribute to anti-Japanese heroes.
According to Phoenix TV, a special drone show was staged on Saturday evening along the Wan Chai waterfront where a total of 1,200 drones lit up the night sky above Victoria Harbour, forming images such as fighter planes and the Wu Kau Tang Anti-Japanese Martyrs Monument. Blending modern technology with art, the performance told the story of the Chinese people's courageous struggle against Japanese aggression.
Another scene recreated the front page of a 1945 newspaper emblazoned with the words "Japan Surrenders!" The 15-minute show drew many residents who arrived early to secure a viewing spot, according to the media report.
On September 3, the HKSAR government will hold a solemn official ceremony at the Memorial Garden of City Hall, Hong Kong Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki was quoted as saying in a report by local media Bauhinia Magazine.
This year's ceremony will be larger and more formal than that in previous years, with representatives from various sectors of society, as well as youth and student groups—including members of uniformed organizations and youth associations—invited to participate. The event aims to help citizens remember history, honor fallen heroes and compatriots, appreciate the spirit of resistance, and cherish peace, Chan said.
In Hong Kong, a variety of activities have been held to commemorate the anniversary. For instance, the Hong Kong Museum of History joined hands with the National Museum of China to stage "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: United in Arms, Standing for Peace - 80th Anniversary of Chinese Victory in the War of Resistance Exhibition" from August 27 until December 15.
This exhibition illustrates the facts of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the role of the Communist Party of China as the mainstay during the War of Resistance, the support of Hong Kong in the national campaign, and the significance and contribution of the China theatre and the world's anti-fascist battlefield.
The exhibition features 183 pieces of War of Resistance relics, including 82 pieces from the collection of the National Museum of China. Around 60 exhibits are on display for the first time. Among them, eight exhibits are grade one national treasures.
