Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun
When asked to comment on US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's remarks about the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday that the SCO has grown into a family of 27 countries spanning Asia, Europe, and Africa, representing nearly half of the world's population and a quarter of the global economy. He said it is now the world's most populous, largest, and most promising regional cooperation organization.
Since its founding 24 years ago, the SCO's member states have adhered to the "Shanghai Spirit" of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diverse civilizations, and the pursuit of common development, Guo said. They have shared opportunities, pursued joint growth, achieved a series of pioneering and historic accomplishments, and established a model for a new type of international relations, said the spokesperson.
Guo noted that the SCO Tianjin Summit was the largest summit in SCO history, describing it as a summit for charting high-quality development, guiding humanity's future direction, and delivering the most fruitful outcomes to date. The summit produced 8 major achievements, including adopting a 10-year development strategy for the SCO, reaffirming commitment to defending the victory of World War II, voicing support for the multilateral trading system, establishing four security centers, making the political decision to set up an SCO development bank, launching six pragmatic cooperation platforms, adopting 6 action plans for high-quality development, and achieving new breakthroughs in SCO reform, Guo said.
The successful convening of the SCO Tianjin Summit will also drive the SCO toward greater unity, closer cooperation, stronger vitality, and more effective actions in pursuing high-quality development, and it is certain to stand as a significant milestone in the organization's history, the spokesperson added.
