The Global Governance Initiative (GGI) has gained significant attention worldwide with multiple countries expressing support for the new initiative and some already announcing their intention to join.
GGI is the fourth landmark global initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, following the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative.
When asked about the GGI, which has been well received by the international community, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday that the GGI put forward by President Xi is the highlight of the SCO Tianjin Summit. It has made this summit a grand gathering that lights up humanity's road forward.
The GGI is a timely response to the hope of the people across the world and provides what the world urgently needs. It has been warmly welcomed and supported by leaders and heads of international organizations participating in the SCO summit, and will surely be more actively endorsed and more widely recognized by the international community, the spokesperson said.
Xi on Monday proposed the GGI, calling on countries to work in concert for a more just and equitable global governance system, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Xi made the remarks when chairing the "Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus" Meeting in north China's port city of Tianjin, where the SCO held the largest summit in its 24-year history, attended by leaders from more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations, Xinhua said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin voiced support on Monday for the GGI, saying that China's proposals are relevant in a situation where "some countries stubbornly seek to use pressure in international affairs," Russian state media TASS reported.
Putin noted that Russia is interested in launching specific discussions on the proposals put forward by our Chinese partners, TASS said.
"The Global Governance Initiative (GGI) will make global governance more responsive to the needs of developing countries. Pakistan is willing to actively participate in the initiative," Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said at the SCO (Plus) Meeting, according to a post published by the Pakistani government on X platform on Tuesday.
Belarus is ready to join China's Global Governance Initiative, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State in the SCO Plus format, the country's news agency BelTA reported.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Monday expressed support for the GGI and announced that the South American country will join the project, Agencia EFE reported.
Besides Venezuela, Nicaragua from the Latin America also joined the initiative, according to local news site Tortilla con Sal. The initiative aims at promoting the construction of a more just and rational system of global governance, working together for the community of a shared future for humanity, the media report said.
The Cuban embassy in China said on Monday that Cuba supports the GGI, according to a post published by the embassy on X platform. This endeavor will advance democratization of international relations and reform of global governance system to ensure the building of a community with a shared future, the post said.
The GGI first reveals a key fact: some countries from the West have largely played a role of creating chaos or remaining inactive in international governance. In contrast, Global South countries are demonstrating stronger will to promote the establishment of a scientific, effective and sustainable governance system, Li Haidong, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times on Tuesday.
"The initiative emphasizes action-orientation and fairness and justice, aiming to gradually address the root causes of intertwined crises and guide the world from a state of high fever back to calm and stability," Li said.
At the same time, the new initiative highlights the central role of the United Nations in global governance, signaling that under the guidance of the Global Security Initiative, the UN's importance will become even more prominent, Li noted.
The initiative addresses "four major deficits" troubling the international community, development, security, trust and governance. It offers directional solutions, and its goal is to boost global confidence in the future and enable the world to achieve win-win outcomes through shared security, common prosperity, and sustainable, green development, the expert said.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday that the GGI proposed by President Xi comes at the right time as the world is fraught with challenges including frequent regional unrest, slowed economic growth and the rise of anti-globalization, Xinhua reported.
The spirit of the initiative is in line with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, Wang noted.
It also aims to firmly support the UN's central role in international affairs, and to encourage countries to participate in the reform of the global governance system by relying on multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations, thereby more effectively addressing challenges, Wang added.
