A gastroenteritis outbreak at Shenyang Normal University has affected a total of 2,087 students since August 31, China Central Television reported on Sunday.

The first cases, with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, were treated at the university hospital, prompting health authorities at both the provincial and municipal levels to set up emergency medical services and dispatch teams to provide on-campus care.

As of 5 pm on Sunday, 1,817 patients had recovered, while 270 students with mild symptoms remain under observation. Authorities noted that the peak of the outbreak has passed, with new daily cases declining significantly—25 were reported between September 6 and 7, the media report said.

An epidemiological investigation, combined with field inspections and laboratory tests, concluded that the outbreak was caused by norovirus contamination in a water storage tank connected to a self-supplied well in the university's third residential area.

The contaminated facility has since been sealed off. The university, in coordination with local water authorities, is ensuring safe water supplies and working to connect the campus to the municipal water system.
