China's commitment to addressing climate change has brings "a lot of security" to the entire world, Ana Toni, CEO of COP30 Climate Change Conference, said on Thursday at the press conference of COP30 CEO ANA TONI held in Embassy of Brazil in China. She emphasized that the Paris Agreement is still functioning with collective leadership from many countries supporting it, despite certain countries' repeated withdrawal.
Toni said she learned that China is preparing to send a large delegation for the upcoming COP30, which is scheduled to be held in Brazil's Belém in November this year. "So we are expecting to have a huge Chinese delegation, not only for diplomats… but we are really hoping inviting the private sector from China, in the private sector from the Global South to show all the solutions that they are bringing to climate change," Toni said.
"One thing that's really wonderful about China, it's a commitment to addressing the problem of climate change, and that brings a lot of security to the entire world," Toni said. She noted that "unfortunately, some other countries are less committed to the international system and have come and gone. For example, it is not the first time that the US is out of the Paris Agreement but the second time."
In January, the United Nations confirmed that it had received official notification from Washington of its withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement, per Xinhua News Agency.
"The US notified the Secretary-General, in his capacity as depositary, of its withdrawal, on 27 January 2025, from the Paris Agreement of 12 December 2015," Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN chief Antonio Guterres, said at a daily briefing on January 28, Xinhua reported.
Toni said she had been asked whether the Paris Agreement would remain strong without US participation. She said that "what unites us is the fact that the great majority of countries are committed to this future system and are working to strengthen it through China's leadership, Brazil's leadership, and our collective leadership in building it together."
She said 195 countries were part of the Paris Agreement. "195 minus one is not zero; it's 194. China and Brazil are therefore deeply committed to working with every other country to strengthen the climate and multilateral system."
"Elections, wars are really bad in delay of implementation. But they come and go. Climate change is a challenge that we will need to work together for many years," Toni noted.
"China has become a healthy and clean energy leader and remains a key player in maintaining and strengthening the multilateral climate system. One of our main objectives is to seize this opportunity to further reinforce the global climate framework, and China has played this role from the very beginning. We expect China to continue working with Brazil to advance this important mission," she added.
