In response to a media inquiry noting that, in his speech at the UN General Assembly, US President Donald Trump criticized China and India for continuing to purchase Russian energy products — thereby funding Russia's war in Ukraine — and also repeatedly criticized the UN and global efforts to address climate change, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that China has always upheld an objective and impartial position and actively promoted peace talks on the Ukraine crisis. He added that the majority of countries, including the US and European nations, are conducting trade with Russia.

Normal exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Russian enterprises are consistent with WTO rules and market principles, target no third party and should not be interfered with or undermined. China will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests, said Guo.

Guo also noted that the UN has played an irreplaceable role in maintaining international peace and security and promoting global development over the past 80 years. China has always believed that the more turbulent and complex the international situation becomes, the more important it is to uphold the authority of the UN.

As a founding member of the UN and permanent member of the UN Security Council, China firmly supports the UN in playing its central role in international affairs, Guo said. Not long ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Governance Initiative, offering China's proposals for strengthening and improving global governance. We are willing to take the 80th anniversary of the UN as an opportunity to work with all countries to in renewing the founding mission of the UN to reaffirm the commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, revitalize the UN's authority and vitality in the new era and enable the organization to play an even bigger role in safeguarding world peace, promoting development and building a community with a shared future for humanity, said Guo.
