When addressing a question regarding a joint statement issued at 4th Quadripartite Meeting of FMs of China, Iran, Pakistan, and Russia held during the high-level week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, firmly opposing the reestablishment of military bases in Afghanistan and the region by countries responsible for the current situation in Afghanistan, describing such moves as detrimental to regional peace and security, and some believe it is a response to US President Donald Trump's statement about reestablishing US presence at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated on Friday that Special Envoy on Afghan Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yue Xiaoyong attended the meeting on Thursday and the meeting issued a joint statement emphasizing respect for Afghanistan's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and reaffirmed firm opposition to redeployment of foreign military bases inside or around Afghanistan by countries responsible for the current situation in Afghanistan. This fully reflects the neighboring countries' respect for Afghanistan's sovereign independence and national dignity, as well as the common will of the international community to assist Afghanistan in stabilizing itself.
As a neighbor of Afghanistan and a responsible state, China is willing to continue working with the international community to provide assistance to the Afghan side and play a constructive role in Afghanistan's peace and reconstruction, Guo added.
