At 7:50 pm on Wednesday, the emergency command center in Nanning, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, detected a sinkhole near the Erkang pump station at the riverside parking lot on the right side of the Beida bridge, through surveillance monitoring, the city's emergency management bureau said in a notice on early Thursday.
Upon discovery of the hazard, the city's emergency command center immediately reported the situation and dispatched rescue teams to the site for emergency response and repair work, said the notice.
A temporary on-site command center has been established, and water conservancy experts have been organized to discuss and formulate a response plan. Safety measures — including temporary traffic control, power suspension, and resident evacuation — have been implemented. Emergency supplies such as concrete are being urgently mobilized to carry out repair operations.
Authorities have also instructed relevant urban districts along the river to continue comprehensive levee patrols and to promptly report and respond to any potential hazards. Further updates will be released as the situation develops.
In recent days, Nanning has experienced heavy rainfall. Affected by Typhoon Matmo, the city saw heavy to torrential rain from the night of Sunday to Monday, with precipitation ranging from 50 to 120 millimeters, and localized areas reaching 150 to 200 millimeters, according to CCTV News.
