A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck the county of Xinlong in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Southwest China's Sichuan Province at 1:17 pm on Thursday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The epicenter was monitored at 30.84 degrees north latitude and 99.86 degrees east longitude. The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, per CENC.
Seismic data from the CENC indicates that a total of 23 earthquakes of magnitude three or above have occurred within 200 kilometers of the epicenter in the past five years. The current event is the largest on record for this area. The center also noted that there are several villages situated within five kilometers of the epicenter.
A working staff from the government of Ganzi told the Global Times on Thursday that relevant authorities have promptly activated an emergency response following the earthquake. Assessments of the epicenter area are underway, and no casualties or building collapses have been reported as of the press time.
After the earthquake, the Sichuan Earthquake Agency promptly activated a Level IV emergency response and coordinated an immediate on-site assessment. Rescue teams from the Ganzi and Kangding earthquake monitoring stations were dispatched with two vehicles and seven personnel to Xinlong to investigate the impact, while a 22-member working group was also sent to assist local authorities with emergency operations, according to the news outlet chinanew.com.
Soon after, the CENC and the Sichuan Earthquake Agency held a joint video conference to assess the situation.
Preliminary analysis suggested that the likelihood of a stronger quake occurring in the affected area in the near term is low, according to the report.
The report by chinanew.com also noted that the earthquake early warning network delivered alerts through multiple channels - including terminals, mobile apps and third-party platforms - providing an 11-second warning for 21 schools and kindergartens in Xinlong and a 105-second warning for Chengdu, capital of Sichuan.
