The Chinese and Indian militaries held the 23rd round of general-level talks on the western sector of the border at the Indian side of the Moldo-Chushul border meeting point on October 25, according to Ministry of National Defense on Wednesday.
The two sides conducted positive and in-depth exchanges on managing the western sector of the China-India boundary. Guided by the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, they agreed to continue communication and dialogue through military and diplomatic channels and jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the China-India border areas.
Over the past year, both China and India have maintained a stable relationship regarding the border questions, Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
In August this year, the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives (SR) of China and India on the Boundary Question was held in New Delhi, India. The two sides had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on the China-India boundary question and reached 10 points of consensus. The two sides reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas, emphasized handling the issue properly through friendly consultations, to promote overall development of the China-India bilateral relationship, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
This time, holding the talks reflects the continuous improvement in bilateral relations, indicating an ongoing positive trend. It further demonstrates that both militaries are strictly implementing the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries in Kazan, Russia, Qian said.
As military exchanges between the two countries increase, this will facilitate the restoration and rebuilding of political mutual trust, which is fundamentally key to ensuring the stable and enduring development of bilateral relations, Qian added.
The expert also said these developments pave the way for overall improvement in bilateral relations.
India on Sunday night also resumed direct flights to the Chinese mainland after a five-year hiatus, Indian officials said. The direct flights between India and the Chinese mainland were operational between the two countries until early 2020 before being suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
