Hong Kong's Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) arrested eight individuals on Friday in multiple districts, including engineering consultants, scaffolding subcontractors, and a middleman as it has launched a full investigation into possible corruption involving the maintenance works at Wang Fuk Court residential compound in Tai Po. The compound, which was under maintenance work, has been engulfed in a deadly five-alarmed fire, causing 128 deaths as of Friday afternoon.

The arrestees, aged between 40 and 63, are seven men and one woman. Among them are four individuals from the consulting firm of the grand renovation project of Wang Fuk Court, namely two directors and two project managers responsible for supervising the project, according to a statement on the ICAC's website.

Three others are scaffolding subcontractors, including a couple who are the proprietor of a company, while the remaining arrestee is a middleman, the statement said.

Search warrants were executed by ICAC officers on Friday at 13 premises, including the offices of the consulting firm and the subcontractors, as well as the residences of the arrestees. Relevant works documents and bank records were seized, the statement said.

All seven residential blocks of Wang Fuk Court engulfed by the fire were undergoing renovation before the incident, which raised public concern over whether the external scaffolding used in repair works posed safety risks.
