During his meeting with Jonathan Powell, the British prime minister's national security adviser, in Beijing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi elaborated on China's principled position regarding Japan-related issues and expressed hope that the UK would continue to uphold the one-China principle and work with China to safeguard victorious outcomes of World War II.
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, said that China and the UK, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, bear significant international responsibilities.
Amid the current international landscape characterized by volatility and transformation, the two countries should maintain strategic communication, enhance mutual trust, and strengthen necessary coordination, Wang added.
China hopes that the UK will view bilateral relations from a long-term perspective, approach China's development with rationality and goodwill, pursue a positive and pragmatic policy toward China, and work with China to meet each other halfway, Wang said.
He added that the two sides should address differences directly, focus on the overarching theme of cooperation, promote the healthy and stable development of China-UK relations, and contribute positively to global peace, development, and prosperity.
For his part, Powell said that China plays a pivotal role in today's world, and the UK's Labour government is committed to developing a consistent, enduring, and strategic relationship with China, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry.
He expressed the UK's willingness to further enhance regular dialogue at all levels and advance fruitful cooperation with China.
The two sides also exchanged views on issues including the Ukraine crisis.
