When asked to comment on Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te's pre-taped interview for The New York Times' Dealbook summit, during which he made irresponsible claims about the situation in the Taiwan Straits, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Friday that relevant US media provided a platform for the Taiwan regional leader to spread "Taiwan independence" fallacies, seriously violating the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiqués, and sending a seriously wrong signal to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces. "China firmly opposes this," he said.
Lin stated that Lai's relevant words and deeds once again expose his true nature as a "die-hard Taiwan independence separatist" and his malicious scheme of seeking independence by relying on the US. This once again proves that he is a saboteur of peace and a maker of trouble, the spokesperson said.
"We urge the US side to fully recognize the extreme sensitivity of the Taiwan question and to honor the commitments made by US leaders. Whatever Lai Ching-te says or does is like trying to hold back the tide with a broom - doomed to fail," said Lin.
