The Chinese Embassy in Canada voiced the strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition on Monday local time toward the Canadian side that has made unwarranted remarks about the conviction in the Jimmy Lai case, slandering and tarnishing the National Security Law for Hong Kong. The embassy condemned the blatant interference in China's internal affairs, which severely violates the basic principles of international relations, according to a statement of the embassy.

Jimmy Lai is a principal architect and participant in a series of major anti-China and destabilizing events in Hong Kong, his crimes are notorious, and the damage he has caused is severe, a spokesperson from the embassy said.

Hong Kong is a society governed by the rule of law, where everyone is equal before the law. The judiciary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has performed its duties in accordance with the law, upholding legal authority and safeguarding national security in a reasonable, lawful, and justified manner, and no one has the right to intervene, the spokesperson noted.

The HKSAR's High Court on Monday morning found Jimmy Lai, an instigator of anti-China riots in Hong Kong, guilty on two charges of conspiring to collude with external forces and a charge of conspiracy to publish seditious materials.

Since the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, Hong Kong society has remained stable, and the rights and freedoms of its residents are firmly protected. We urge Canada to respect China's sovereignty and Hong Kong's rule of law and immediately cease interfering in Hong Kong's judicial system and China's internal affairs, the spokesperson said.
