The US side should abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, handle Taiwan-related issues with prudence, and avoid allowing a very small number of “Taiwan independence” separatists to drag China and the US into dangerous situation of conflict and confrontation, Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said on Wednesday in response to a question about a newly released US National Security Strategy that mentions Taiwan multiple times and claims that it does not support any unilateral change to the status quo in the Taiwan Straits.
The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair and concerns the national sentiments of more than 1.4 billion Chinese people. It brooks no external interference, Zhu said when asked about the US national security document toward which Taiwan regional leader Ching-te expressed the gratitude.
There is only one China in the world, and both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China – this is the true status quo in the Taiwan Straits. It must be pointed out that “Taiwan independence” is fundamentally incompatible with peace in the Taiwan Straits, Zhu said.
