The US government's announcement of a large-scale arms sales plan to China's Taiwan region seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, gravely undermines China's sovereignty and security interests, severely damages China-US strategic mutual trust, and sends an extremely wrong signal to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, Jiang Bin, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, said on Friday, in response to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency's announcement that the US government had approved arms sales to Taiwan totaling more than $11.1 billion and some commentators say this is the largest US arms sales plan to Taiwan to date.

China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposed to this and has lodged solemn representations with the US side, Jiang said.

Jiang stressed that China's complete reunification is an irreversible historical trend that no force can stop. The "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, at the cost of the safety and well-being of Taiwan compatriots, squander the hard-earned money of ordinary residents to enrich US arms dealers, attempting to "seek independence through force." Such actions are doomed to fail and will only lead to self-destruction.

The US has repeatedly broken its promises and betrayed its commitments, condoning and supporting "Taiwan independence," which will inevitably backfire on itself, the spokesperson said.

"We urge the US to earnestly honor its commitment not to support 'Taiwan independence' and to immediately stop arms sales to Taiwan. The Chinese People's Liberation Army will continue to strengthen training and combat readiness and take resolute measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and firmly thwart 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities and external interference," Jiang said.
