At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung will pay a state visit to China from January 4 to 7, 2026, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced on Tuesday.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said on December 22, in response to media inquiry on the visit, that "from a strategic perspective, the government is considering how the two countries can cooperate for peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia, and how China's economic development affects South Korean companies," adding that both sides will seek ways to achieve a "win-win" outcome, according to South Korean media News 1.

In a recent exclusive interview with Global Times, Ro Jae-hun, South Korea's ambassador to China, believed that China and South Korea are now standing at a critical juncture.

Looking back on the efforts made by predecessors from both countries to advance the establishment of diplomatic ties, he said that the two sides today likewise need such perseverance and strategic resolve to jointly respond to changes across multiple dimensions, including economic and trade cooperation, regional governance, and people-to-people exchanges.
