The People's Liberation Army (PLA)'s military exercises serve as severe punishment for the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces' attempts to seek "independence" through military means, and is a necessary action to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Tuesday, in response to media inquiry over US government's recent approval of $11 billion arms sales to China's Taiwan region as well as US leader's latest claims about PLA's exercises around Taiwan island.
