The Chinese Embassy and consulates in Mexico urged Chinese nationals to be vigilant against earthquake hazards after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck near San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero on Friday, according to the embassy on Friday night.

Citing the Mexico's National Seismological Service, the embassy noted that the quake occurred at 7:58 am local time. The epicenter was located at 16.77 degrees north latitude and 99.41 degrees west longitude, with a focal depth of 5 kilometers. Multiple aftershocks have been recorded.

Mexican authorities said there have been no reports of serious damage so far. Meteorological officials added that there is currently no risk of a tsunami, according to the embassy.

The Chinese Embassy and consulates in Mexico urged Chinese nationals in the country to closely monitor seismic developments, weather alerts, and disaster-prevention information, to follow guidance and evacuation instructions issued by local authorities, and to strengthen personal safety precautions.

In case of emergency, they are advised to contact local police promptly and reach out to the Chinese Embassy or consulates in Mexico for assistance.

The strong earthquake rattled southern and central Mexico on Friday, interrupting President Claudia Sheinbaum 's first press briefing of the new year as seismic alarms sounded and leaving at least two people dead, per AP News. There were more than 500 aftershocks.
