The mainland has full confidence and capability to crush any attempt at "de jure Taiwan independence" in whatever form, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said on Sunday, in response to reports that some officials from Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authority have proposed amendments to the current "act governing relations between the people of the Taiwan area and the mainland area," redefining cross-Straits relations as those between "Taiwan and the People's Republic of China," while deleting the phrase "before national reunification" from the existing provisions.

Chen Binhua, the spokesperson, said that the mainland is closely following the developments concerned. This proposal disregards the mainstream public opinion in island of Taiwan and the wellbeing and security of Taiwan compatriots, and openly challenges the historical and legal fact that Taiwan is a part of China. It attempts to alter the current situation in the Taiwan Straits, namely that there is only one China in the world and both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China.

Chen said that it is a blatant push for "de jure Taiwan independence," a deliberate provocation that heightens tensions across the Straits, undermines peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits and the region, and lays bare its malicious intent and egregious nature. It fully demonstrates that the Lai Ching-te authority and the DPP are nothing but "saboteurs of peace," "manufacturers of crises" and "instigators of war."

"Taiwan independence" means war — it is a dead end and road to ruin. We have full confidence and sufficient capability to crush any attempt at "de jure Taiwan independence" in whatever form, and we will never allow "Taiwan independence" separatist forces to separate Taiwan from China in any name or by any means, said Chen.

History has proved — and will continue to prove — that engaging in "Taiwan independence" separatist activities will never end well and will only lead to complete failure, said Chen, noting that should the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces dare to take reckless risks and cross the red line, we will, in accordance with the Anti-Secession Law, take resolute measures and deliver a firm and powerful blow.

We hope that the broad masses of Taiwan compatriots will fully recognize the evil nature and grave harm of "Taiwan independence," stand firmly on the right side of history, resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence" separatist activities, and work together with us to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and protect our common home of the Chinese nation, said Chen.
