Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in an X post on Tuesday local time that the Canada-China relationship is "at its best" and "has created massive opportunities for both our peoples."

By forging a new strategic partnership based on respect and ambition, our nations are working to renew this relationship, creating greater stability, security, and prosperity, read the post by the Canadian leader who just concluded his official visit to China earlier in January, a first by a Canadian Prime Minister since 2017.

China and Canada have reached specific arrangements to properly address trade issues related to electric vehicles (EVs), steel and aluminum products, rapeseed, and agricultural and aquatic products, China's Ministry of Commerce said on January 17, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Prior to the X post on Tuesday, Carney on Saturday called for "buy Canadian" and "build Canadian" in response to a new tariff threat from US President Donald Trump, Xinhua repored.

Trump on Saturday threatened to slap a 100 percent tariff on Canadian goods coming into the US.

On Monday, Carney said that Canada is focused on building economic resilience and diversifying trade partnerships to reduce its reliance on the US. He characterized Trump's recent tariff threat as having been made in a broader context of trade negotiations with Canada, specifically ahead of the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, per Xinhua.

Commenting on the US threat of tariffs on Canadian products, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Monday noted that China believes countries need to approach state-to-state relations in the spirit of win-win rather than the mentality of zero-sum, and through cooperation rather than confrontation.

China and Canada have established a new type of strategic partnership, and made some specific arrangements on properly handling the economic and trade issues between the two countries. This reflects the spirit of equality, openness and inclusiveness, peaceful cooperation, and shared benefit. It does not target any third party, serves the common interests of the people of both countries, and is conducive to world peace, stability, development and prosperity, the spokesperson said.
