The Kremlin on Sunday published on its website a condolence message written by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Iranian President. Putin expressed "deepest condolences" to Masoud Pezeshkian, condemning the "cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law" in the killing of Ali Khamenei and members of his family.

In Russia, Ayatollah Khamenei would be remembered as an outstanding statesman who made an enormous personal contribution to the development of friendly Russian-Iranian relations and to elevating them to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership, Putin said in the letter.

Putin also asked the Iranian president to convey his most sincere sympathy and support to the relatives and loved ones of the Supreme Leader, as well as to the government and the entire people of Iran.

Iran's state media confirmed Sunday that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in US-Israeli attacks on Saturday. The Iranian government announced a 40-day mourning period after the report of the leader's death.
