"China-LAC cooperation has no geopolitical calculations, does not target any third party, and should not be interfered with or affected by any third party," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a regular press conference on Monday, when asked how China will protect its partnerships in Latin America, as well as its assets and investments in the region as US President Donald Trump claimed that the US would not allow hostile foreign forces to gain a foothold in the Western Hemisphere, including in the Panama Canal, following his meeting with more than a dozen Latin American and Caribbean leaders last week, though he didn't mention China specifically.

Guo said that Latin American and Caribbean countries are sovereign and independent states and have the right to independently choose their development paths and cooperation partners. China has consistently adhered to the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, openness and inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation in conducting exchanges and cooperation across various fields with Latin American and Caribbean countries.
