A Taiwan regional trade delegate has called the Hainan expo "a good start" for high-quality products entering the Chinese mainland market, as the Taiwan-themed exhibition area makes its debut at the Sixth China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE), which opened in Haikou, South China's Hainan Province on Monday.
This is an excellent platform and it's a great place for products from Taiwan to reach a wider market across the mainland, and it also provides a valuable platform for international expansion, Paul Hsu, chairman of the General Chamber of Commerce of Taiwan region, made the remarks at the launch ceremony of the Taiwan-themed exhibition area on Monday.
"I believe the exhibition today is a great success, and I hope there will be more opportunities for Taiwan companies to participate in the future," he said.
Regarding the CICPE, Hsu said that they certainly hope to establish a fast channel and bridge between the two sides, enabling more high-quality products to enter the mainland market.
"I think this is a good start," he added.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on April 8 that the sixth CICPE will feature a Taiwan-themed exhibition area for the first time, with 20 companies from Taiwan region showcasing high-quality products including unique cultural and creative products, biotechnology and health products, fashionable goods, and selected gourmet foods.
The mainland market, with its population of over 1.4 billion, is large enough to be the world's most promising consumer market. We welcome more high-quality products from Taiwan to enter the mainland market and will continue to build more market-oriented and professional platforms for businesses from Taiwan region to share in the development opportunities and establish themselves there, Zhu said.
The GT reporter observed that within the 360-square-meter exhibition area, well-known enterprises such as Taiwan region's Want Want Group and Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor factory are presented, along with quality brands including Bamboo House's Taiwan high-mountain tea. The exhibits cover diverse categories such as cultural and creative ceramics, Taiwan high-mountain tea, and souvenir pastries.
The mainland market is huge — where there are mouths, there is market, a sales representative from Want Want Group told the Global Times on Monday.
He said that in addition to these traditional product categories, they have developed more products targeting the silver-haired generation, various age groups including children, and even products related to the 'medicine-food homology' concept for the senior market.
"I believe that food companies everywhere are now eager to enter the mainland market, hoping to expand and strengthen the entire industrial chain," he said.
Our products are exported to the US, Japan, Singapore, as well as Hong Kong. Wherever there are Chinese people, that is our target market," a sales representative from TA YU FOOD ENT. CO told the Global Times.
"The mainland market is so huge. If we can tap into an even larger market, we will consider setting up a factory in the mainland," the representative said.
The CICPE came at the heels of authorities on the Chinese mainland have put forward a package of 10 policies and measures to boost exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait, according to the Xinhua News Agency on Sunday.
The Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee unveiled the package on Sunday, saying it aims to advance the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and enhance the kinship and well-being of compatriots across the Strait, Xinhua said.
The mainland will explore building wharves and berths in regions where conditions permit for distant-water fishing vessels from the Taiwan region, and mull providing convenience for the sale of their fish catch on the mainland, according to the statement.
It will also facilitate registration procedures for qualified Taiwan food manufacturers and the entry of their food products into the mainland market.
According to the statement, the mainland will explore the establishment of more trading markets for small-ticket items with Taiwan and support micro, small and medium-sized enterprises from Taiwan to expand business on the mainland.
