When asked about the joint statement issued on April 28 local time by the US and several Latin American countries accusing China of "politicizing maritime trade" in the Panama port issue, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday at a press conference that the remarks are completely fabricated and a deliberate distortion of facts.
"Who has long occupied the Panama Canal, launched armed invasions against Panama, and wantonly trampled on Panama's sovereignty and dignity? Who is coveting the Panama Canal and attempting to turn this permanently neutral international waterway into their own private channel, while disregarding the sovereignty of regional countries? The answer is self-evident. It is the US that is politicizing and securitizing the port issue, and it is also the US that is being hypocritical, spreading rumors and slander everywhere," Lin said.
Lin also stated that the relevant Chinese authorities are conducting normal inspections of vessels in accordance with laws and regulations. China's position on the Panama port issue is clear: we will firmly safeguard our legitimate rights and interests. We also advise relevant countries not to be deceived or exploited by forces with ulterior motives.
