Police in Menyuan, Northwest China's Qinghai Province, recognized a fugitive they had been hunting for eight years among a crowd after a 6.9- magnitude earthquake hit Qinghai on Saturday.

The fugitive, surnamed Yang, left his house after the earthquake happened. When the police were patrolling the streets, they realized Yang's face looked similar to that of a fraudster they had been hunting for a long time, even though his face was half-covered with a mask, reported The Paper on Sunday.

After interrogation, they confirmed that Yang was the fugitive and immediately arrested him.

No deaths have been reported in the earthquake in Qinghai as of press time.

"To the fugitive, the earthquake might be a message calling him to 'get out,'" joked a netizen on Sina Weibo.
