Mayor removed from position amid rapid COVID-19 increase in Jilin, Northeast China

The mayor of Jilin City, in Northeast China's Jilin Province, has been removed from his position as COVID-19 cases in the city continued to soar.

Wang Lu, deputy Party secretary and mayor of Jilin City, the second biggest city in Jilin Province, has been dismissed, according to an official decision of the Communist Party of China Jilin Provincial Committee on Friday night. 

Another official, Li Xin, was removed from his position as head of Jiutai district, Changchun, the provincial capital. The city has been carrying out closed-loop management against COVID-19 since Friday.

On Thursday, Zhang Lifeng, Party secretary of the committee of the Jilin Agricultural Science and Technology University in Jilin City, was sacked for negligence and ineffective response to a cluster infection at that the university. 

On Friday, Jilin Province found 134 confirmed cases, pushing the number of confirmed cases in the whole of the Chinese mainland to 588.

From March 1 to Friday, Jilin City alone has reported 1,034 local COVID-19 confirmed cases, which some netizens suspect to be the "fasted increase" in the Chinese mainland after the Wuhan outbreak.

Jilin City Health Commission said on Saturday that infection is the city is still in the process of rapid increase.

As nucleic acid tests are being conducted across Jilin City, it is expected more confirmed cases will be found. The city conducted the seventh round of nucleic acid tests on Saturday.
