Two giant pandas, female Lan Yun born on July 29, 2020 and male He Feng born on August 27, 2020, departed for the Schonbrunn Zoo in Austria from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (hereafter the Center) on Wednesday, the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA) said on Wednesday.
The arrangement was made based on an agreement signed by the CWCA and Vienna's Schonbrunn Zoo in June 2024 to strengthen cooperation on the protection of giant pandas and related research. It continues more than 20 years of cooperation between the two sides and starting a new round of 10-year cooperation on giant panda.
Before transportation of the two pandas, China and Austria have prepared and made every effort to ensure that the two pandas can arrive at the Schonbrunn Zoo safely and smoothly. The Chinese side has carried out quarantine and physical examinations on the two giant pandas, and both are in good health. Experts have visited the Schonbrunn Zoo to check the venue for the giant pandas and provided technical guidance.
Food such as steamed corn bread, bamboo shoots, and carrots, as well as water and medicine, have been prepared to meet the demand of the giant pandas during the flight. The Center has dispatched a veterinarian, and the Schonbrunn Zoo has dispatched a keeper to escort the two giant pandas on the flight.
The Schonbrunn Zoo has made full preparations to welcome the giant pandas. It has renovated and upgraded the enclosures, ensured a long-term and stable source of bamboo, formed an experienced feeding and management team, and formulated a complete set of feeding and management rules and standards.
Based on solid foundation, the new round of China-Austria international cooperation will achieve more results in aspects such as giant panda conservation and breeding, disease prevention and control, scientific and technological exchanges, and assistance in the in-situ conservation of giant pandas and the construction of the Giant Panda National Park, according to the CWCA. It will make new contributions to global biodiversity conservation and the enhancement of the friendship between the people of the two countries.
