In response to a question regarding US government sources reportedly claiming China has shown “insufficient sincerity” in negotiations over the fentanyl issue and that Washington may impose additional punitive measures to pressure Beijing into taking substantive action, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated on Friday that fentanyl is a US problem, not China’s, and that the responsibility lies with the US itself.

Guo said at a regular press briefing on Friday that the US has ignored China’s goodwill and imposed fentanyl-related tariffs, which is an act of typical bullying that seriously undermines bilateral drug control dialogue and cooperation.

The US should understand that smearing and attacking China will not conceal its own failures, that repaying goodwill with hostility won’t solve the issue, and that pressure and threats are not the right way to engage with China, Guo said.
