A Chinese national was killed during an armed robbery at a Chinese-funded farm in Kitwe, Zambia's Copperbelt Province, on May 29. The attack, reportedly orchestrated through collusion between local security staff employed by the farm, a former employee, and the assailants, has drawn stern lodge from the Chinese Embassy in Zambia.
After receiving report on the case, the embassy dispatched a team to the scene and coordinated with local Chinese associations and volunteers to handle post-incident matters. It lodged a formal protest with Zambian authorities, calling the case a serious incident with severe consequences, and urged law enforcement to expedite investigations into this and other recent violent crimes targeting Chinese nationals, according to a release from the Chinese Embassy.
Zambian police have reported the arrest of two out of five suspects, with efforts ongoing to apprehend the others, said the release.
The embassy reiterated its commitment to protecting the safety and legal rights of Chinese citizens and called on Chinese companies and individuals in Zambia to enhance security measures, avoid large cash transactions, and ensure the reliability of hired security personnel.
It also reminded Chinese nationals to stay alert and seek help in emergencies via local police or the embassy's 24-hour consular hotline.
