An extremely rare P blood type, rarer than the "Panda Blood" (Rh-negative blood), has been discovered at the central blood station of Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest China's Yunnan Province, according to the official WeChat account of the blood station on Monday.

During irregular antibody screening of blood from a donor with blood type O, doctors at the blood station observed clumping between the donor's serum and both antibody screening cells and antibody identification panel cells, but no reaction with the donor’s own red blood cells.

To confirm the findings, the blood station reported this blood type to the clinical transfusion research institute of Guangzhou Blood Center.

Through serological and genetic testing, experts confirmed that the donor’s blood carried the rare anti-PP1Pk (anti-Tja) antibody, confirming the blood type as P blood type, according to the blood station.

This is the first time the P blood type has been detected at the Wenshan central blood station since its establishment, during which nearly 570,000 donations have been screened, according to the report.

The P blood type is an exceptionally rare subtype within the P blood group system. Since it was first identified in 1927 by Austrian biologist Karl Landsteiner, very few cases have been reported worldwide, said the blood station.

The type is less than one in a million, far lower than the 0.3 percent frequency of "panda blood" and the one-in-100,000 rate of the para-Bombay blood phenotype, also known as "dinosaur blood", according to the report.

This discovery not only enriches the rare blood type database but also provides valuable reference for the future detection and treatment of similar cases.
