Asked to comment on a Bloomberg report citing a US CDC spokesperson saying the agency plans to issue a travel notice for China due to rising chikungunya cases, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at Thursday's regular press briefing that the National Health Commission had previously held a press conference outlining the situation in some southern Chinese cities, where imported cases of chikungunya have led to local transmission, pointing out that the current situation is preventable, treatable, and controllable.

Guo said that chikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease first reported abroad in the 1950s, with its spread now documented in 119 countries and regions. China has maintained communication with the World Health Organization (WHO) on the matter, and the Chinese government has always attached great importance to the health of both Chinese citizens and foreign nationals in the country, and will as always provide a comfortable, safe, and convenient travel environment for both domestic and overseas travelers.
