Renowned historian and scholar Cho-yun Hsu, known for his expansive work on Chinese history and culture, has died in the US at the age of 95, thepaper.cn reported on Monday.

Hsu was born in Xiamen, East China's Fujian Province, in 1930, and settled in Pittsburgh, the US, in 1970.

The full-scale outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) in 1937 left a lasting mark on Hsu, who was a child at the time. In a televised interview at age 93, when asked about his lifelong regrets, he paused before quoting Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) poet Lu You: "My only hatred is that a unified land is not seen." Fighting back tears, he added, "I grew up during the war of resistance - the word 'China' is engraved on my heart." He spoke of the soldiers and civilians who gave their lives during the war, saying, "We must not forget - I cannot forget," according to the report by thepaper.cn.

He had served as a professor on Taiwan island, in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Hawaii, and Duke University. He was an emeritus professor in the Department of History at the University of Pittsburgh.

Hsu had a career as a historian spanning many decades. He authored numerous academic and popular works, including Western Chou Civilization and Han Agriculture, along with widely read titles such as Eternal Rivers.
