In response to a question that the US President Donald Trump recently stated that the US and Russia discussed nuclear disarmament and expressed hope that China would join this process, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday that demanding that China join US-Russia-China trilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations is neither reasonable nor realistic.

Trump said he wants to open denuclearization talks with Russia and China, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

The US President also said he had raised the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin but he did not share specific details on when the conversation took place, Reuters said. "We're talking about limiting nuclear weapons. We'll get China into that," Trump was quoted as saying in the media report.

In response, Guo Jiakun said that China has noted the relevant reports. Countries possessing the largest nuclear arsenals should earnestly fulfill their special and primary responsibility for nuclear disarmament, take further substantive steps to significantly reduce their nuclear stockpiles, and create conditions for the ultimate realization of complete and thorough disarmament.

China's nuclear capabilities are not on the same scale as those of the US. The two countries' nuclear policies and strategic security environments are also fundamentally different. Demanding that China join US-Russia-China trilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations is neither reasonable nor realistic, Guo said.

"China adheres to a no-first-use policy, pursues a nuclear strategy of self-defense, and has always kept its nuclear forces at the minimum level required for national security. China does not engage in an arms race with any country. China's nuclear strength and policy constitute an important contribution to world peace," Guo said.
