China maintains continuity and stability in its policy toward South Korea and hopes that South Korea will work together with China to jointly promote the sustained, healthy and stable development of the China-South Korea strategic cooperative partnership, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

Guo's remarks were made in response to media inquiry over comments from South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, who said on Monday that Seoul's approach of relying on the US for security while depending on China for economic cooperation, is no longer possible to be maintained, according to media reports.

Lee made the remarks in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, the US following his first summit with US President Donald Trump at the White House, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported.

Guo said a healthy, stable and continuously deepening China-South Korea relationship aligns with the fundamental interests of both nations and contributes to peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and the world.

"This is a consensus shared by both China and South Korea," Guo added.

The development of China-South Korea relations stems from mutual interests, is not directed at any third party and should not be influenced by third-party factors, Guo emphasized.
