Li Ming, spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency, said on Thursday that following a powerful earthquake in Afghanistan that caused heavy casualties and property losses, China has decided to provide 50 million yuan ($6.9 million) in emergency humanitarian aid, mainly including tents, blankets and food, which are urgently needed in the disaster-hit areas.

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan has risen to 2,205, with 3,640 others injured, the Afghan Red Crescent Society reported on Thursday, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

The earthquake struck the eastern part of Afghanistan at 11:47 pm local time on August 31, with the epicenter located 27 km northeast of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, at a depth of eight km, Xinhua reported on Tuesday.
