In the early hours of Sunday, the first batch of emergency humanitarian supplies from China for earthquake relief in Afghanistan was dispatched, according to the China International Development Cooperation Agency.
The shipment, primarily consisting of tents and blankets, departed for Kabul aboard two Chinese Air Force Y-20 aircraft. Additional relief supplies will be airlifted to Kabul in the coming days and distributed to earthquake victims as quickly as possible, the agency said.
Death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan climbed to 2,205, with 3,640 others injured, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Thursday, citing the Afghan Red Crescent Society.
Rescue operations remain underway amid reports that many people are still trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed homes, the organization said, per Xinhua.
