When asked about the claims made by Chiu Chui-cheng, head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, who recently visited the US and who referred to the Chinese mainland as the "biggest threat" to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, hyping up the so-called "mainland's use of force against Taiwan," and expressing gratitude for the US' commitments to the Taiwan region, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. This is the true status quo of the Taiwan Straits. Lin added that the collusion between "Taiwan independence" separatist forces and external forces constitutes the biggest threat to cross-Straits peace and stability.
Lin said China firmly opposes any form of official exchanges and military collusion between the US and the Taiwan region, and resolutely safeguards national sovereignty and territorial integrity. "We urge the US side to strictly abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, and stop sending wrong signals to the 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces," he said.
No matter how the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities hype up the so-called mainland threat, stoke tensions across the Taiwan Straits, or use the hard-earned money of the Taiwan people in an attempt to "seek independence by relying on external forces," they cannot change the fact that the two sides of the Straits belong to one and the same China, nor can they change the trend toward China's ultimate and inevitable reunification, according to the spokesperson.
"To Chiu and the like, we have this message: Engaging in 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities by betraying national interests is nothing but petty, clownish posturing. Such attempts are doomed to fail," Lin added.
