Premier of the State Council Li Qiang will attend the general debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York from September 22 to 26. While in New York, Premier Li will also attend events held by China, including the high-level meeting on the Global Development Initiative, and meet with UN Secretary-General and leaders of relevant countries, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced on Friday.
Regarding China's expectations for this visit, the ministry's spokesperson Lin Jian said this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the UN. At a time when once-in-a-century changes are unfolding at an accelerated pace, global governance deficits are worsening, and the international community widely expects efforts to uphold the UN's authority and strengthen its role. The General Debate of the UN General Assembly provides an important opportunity for the international community to build political consensus, enhance solidarity and cooperation, and jointly address common challenges, the spokesperson said.
China firmly supports the UN in playing a central role in international affairs. Not long ago, President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), offering a Chinese solution to further strengthen and improve global governance. During his multilateral and bilateral engagements, Premier Li Qiang will comprehensively present China's views on the current international situation, major global issues, and the work of the UN, while elaborating in depth on China's domestic and foreign policies as well as major initiatives such as the GGI, Lin noted.
China is ready to take this visit as an opportunity to work with all parties to revisit the founding aspirations of the UN, reaffirm commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and help the UN reinvigorate its authority and vitality in the new era, so as to make greater contributions to safeguarding world peace, promoting development, and building a community with a shared future for humanity, Lin said.
